Here is the sixth Two Major One Minor segment of 2013. This is my third year of doing this series where I feature two Major League players and one minor league player each week. This week I am featuring Patrick Corbin, Jose Quintana and D J Baxendale.
LHP Patrick Corbin of the Arizona Diamondbacks is a dominant force in the desert after enduring the fires of his rookie season. Last year with the Diamondbacks he was 6-8, 4.54 ERA, 86 K, 1.33 WHIP in 107.0 IP after starting the season pitching with Double A Mobile and Triple A Reno. This season he is a rising star in Phoenix with his start of 4-0, 1.80 ERA, 32 K, 1.07 WHIP in 40.0 IP over 6 games. Both seasons he has maintained a steady 7.2 K/9 rate which is down some from his rate in the minors. He was originally drafted by the Angels in the second round in 2009. Corbin will be 24 on July 19.
LHP Jose Quintana of the Chicago White Sox is also starting his sophomore effort out strong. Last season he was 6-6, 3.76 ERA, 81 K, 1.35 WHIP in 136.1 IP over 25 games with the White Sox after starting the season with Double A Birmingham. He has started 2013 2-0, 3.86 ERA, 25 K, 1.25 WHIP in 32.2 IP over 6 games. He has upped his K/9 rate by over a batter to 6.9 and had hit double digits over three seasons in the minors. He originally signed with the Mets as an amateur free agent in 2006 out of Columbia. Quintana turned 24 on January 24.
RHP D J Baxendale pitches for Class A Advanced Fort Myers of the Minnesota Twins. He is in his second season in the minors and has started 2013 off strong. This season he is 5-0, 1.49 ERA, 35 K, 0.83 WHIP in 36.1 IP over 6 games. He is only one season removed from college as he was pitching with Arkansas last spring and made it to the College World Series in June. The Twins drafted him in the 10th round and he pitched another 18.2 IP with 31 K between Rookie Elizabethton and Class A Beloit. Baxendale turned 22 on December 8th.
