Two Major One Minor 043013

Here is the fifth Two Major One Minor segment of 2013. This is my third year of doing this series where I feature two Major League players and one minor league player each week. This week I am featuring Daniel Nava, Jean Segura and Joey Gallo.

Nava is an OF\1B with the Boston Red Sox who is showing some spark with his bat which translates into more playing time. He is a back up at the corner outfield spots and should be part of a steady rotation in addition to spending time at DH. This season he is hitting .310/.407/.535 with 4 HR, 16 RBI, 15 R,  0 SB in 21 games. He turned 30 on February 22 and if he continues at this rate will be the definition of late bloomer.

Segura is a shortstop with the Milwaukee Brewers and is showing offensive prowess in his first full season. He first hit my radar last season when he was with Double A Arkansas of the Los Angeles Angels. Segura was establishing himself as a good hitting shortstop that could swipe plenty of bases and hit an occasional ball out. He was traded to the Brewers and they will take advantage of their shortstop of the future. This season he is hitting .364/.398/.534 with 2 HR, 8 RBI, 11 R, 7 SB in 23 games. Batting second ahead of Ryan Braun will also put him in position to score several runs. Segura has a bright future ahead and he just turned 23 on March 17.

Gallo is a third baseman with Class A Hickory of the Texas Rangers. I have already professed some views on him when I took him this year in our fantasy draft. I believe he will one day be a prolific power hitter in the majors. This season he is hitting .221/.327/.558 with 8 HR, 17 RBI, 16 R, 1 SB in 24 games with Hickory. Last season he played at Rookie Arizona and Class A Spokane just months after being drafted by the Rangers with the 39th pick of the first round out of high school. He hit .293/.435/.733 with 18 HR, 43 RBI, 44 R, 6 SB in 43 games at Arizona and hit .214/.343/.464 with 4 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 0 SB in 16 games at Spokane. Gallo has the ability and mind set to attack at the plate and just needs some guidance to refine his approach as he rises through the minors.

Hernan Iribarren 5 for 5 vs Bees 042913

Hernan Iribarren of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox had an impressive season debut as he went 5 for 5  in a 12-6 victory over the Salt Lake Bees. Colorado Springs is the Triple A team of the Colorado Rockies. For the game he was was 5 for 5 with one RBI and two runs while playing second base. Being his first game of the season that shows him hitting 1.000/1.000/1.000 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 1 game. Last season with Colorado Springs he hit .302/.368.378 with 1 HR, 40 RBI, 62 R, 20 SB in 111 games. Iribarren did have brief appearances in the MLB playing with the Brewers in 2008 and 2009 as he hit .185/.241/.296 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 24 games. He originally signed with the Brewers as an amateur free agent in 2002 out of Venezuela. Iribarren will be 29 on June 29.
