2011 Where are they now 2007 MLB draft picks 41 to 50

It is the off season and I'm checking how picks 41 to 50 of the 2007 draft did this season. Traditionally players drafted out of college advance faster than those drafted out of high school and pitchers usually advance faster than position players. Some players might also be traded to help their team get an established player that can help their team improve immediately.


The Oakland Athletics drafted LHP/1B Sean Doolittle 41st out of Virginia. He missed all of 2010 and most of 2011 with knee injuries. He played only one game at Rookie ball in 2011 and pitched one inning to post a 9.00 ERA, two strikeouts and 1.00 WHIP.


The New York Mets drafted RHP Eddie Kunz 42nd out of Oregon State. He was traded to the Padres in March 2011. He pitched at Double A and was 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA, 27 strikeouts and 1.44 WHIP in 73.1 innings over 52 games.


The San Francisco Giants drafted catcher Jackson Williams 43rd out of Oklahoma. He split 2011 between Double A and Triple A. He hit .208/.288/.415 with three home runs, nine RBI, eight runs and zero steals in 18 games at Double A and hit .184/.288/.232 with one home runs, 12 RBI, 13 runs and zero steals in 56 games at Triple A.


The Texas Rangers drafted RHP Neil Ramirez 44th out of Kempsville High School in Virginia. He split 2011 between Class A Advanced, Double A and Triple A. He was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, nine strikeouts and 0.43 WHIP in 4.1 innings in one game at Class A Advanced, was 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 1.10 WHIP in 19 innings over six games at Double A and was 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA, 86 strikeouts and 1.32 WHIP in 74.1 innings over 18 games at Triple A.


The Toronto Blue Jays drafted shortstop Justin Jackson 45th out of Roberson High School in North Carolina. He split 2011 between Class A Advanced and Double A. He hit .259/.342/.361 with four home runs, 24 RBI, 67 runs and 8 steals in 92 games at Class A Advanced and hit .212/.280/.341 with one home run, six RBI, 11 runs and 2 steals in 28 games at Double A.


The San Diego Padres drafted shortstop Andrew Cumberland 46th out of Pace High School in Florida. He missed the 2011 season with a neurological condition but is expected to return.


The New York Mets drafted LHP Nathan Vineyard 47th out of Woodland High School in Georgia. He retired from baseball after two seasons.


The Chicago Cubs drafted catcher Joshua Donaldson 48th out of Auburn. He was traded to the Athletics in 2008. He played 2011 at Triple A and hit .261/.344/.439 with 17 home runs, 70 RBI, 79 runs and 13 steals in 115 games.


The Washington Nationals drafted outfielder Michael Burgess 49th out of Hillsborough High School in Florida. He played 2011 at Class A Advanced and hit .225/.323/.427 with 20 home runs, 68 RBI, 61 runs and one steal in 122 games.


The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted RHP Wes Roemer 50th out of Cal State Fullerton. He split 2011 between Double A and Triple A. He was 8-7 with a 4.51 ERA, 97 strikeouts and 1.38 WHIP in 139.2 innings over 24 games at Double A and was 0-1 with a 3.70 ERA, 18 strikeouts and 1.27 WHIP in 24.1 innings over four games at Triple A.

The Washington Nationals drafted LHP Josh Smoker 31st out of Calhoun High School in Georgia. He pitched 2011 at Class A Advanced. He was 5-2 with a 2.31 ERA, 56 strikeouts, 1.36 WHIP and two saves in 50.2 innings over 46 games.


The San Francisco Giants drafted Shortstop Nick Noonan 32nd out of Francis Parker High School in South Dakota. He split 2011 between Class A Advanced, Double A and Triple A. He hit .246/.311/.336 with one home run, 16 RBI, 14 runs and one steal in 28 games at Class A Advanced, hit .212/.303/.288 with three home runs, 25 RBI, 28 runs and 2 steals in 71 games at Double A and hit .297/.366/.378 with one home run, four RBI, six runs and one steal in 13 games at Triple A. 


The Atlanta Braves drafted 2B/3B Jon Gilmore 33rd out of Iowa City High School in Iowa. He played 2011 at Double A. He hit .283/.351/.417 with three home runs, 28 RBI, 19 runs and zero steals in 50 games.


The Cincinnati Reds drafted SS/OF Todd Frazier 34th out of Rutgers. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Reds. He hit .260/.340/.467 with 15 home runs, 46 RBI, 47 runs and 17 steals in 90 games at Triple A and hit .232/.289/.438 with six home runs, 15 RBI, 17 runs and one steal in 41 games with the Reds.


The Texas Rangers drafted outfielder Julio Borbon 35th out of Tennessee. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Rangers. He hit .298/.376/.435 with zero home runs, 14 RBI, 27 runs and 16 steals in 32 games at Triple A and hit .270/.305/.348 with zero home runs, 11 RBI, 10 runs and 6 steals in 32 games with the Rangers.


The St Louis Cardinals drafted RHP Clayton Mortensen 36th out of Gonzaga. He was traded to the Athletics in July 2009 and then traded to the Rockies in January 2011. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Rockies. He was 2-8 with a 9.42 ERA, 54 strikeouts and 2.08 WHIP in 64 innings over 15 games at Triple A and was 2-4 with a 3.86 ERA, 30 strikeouts and 1.35 WHIP in 58.1 innings over 16 games with the Rockies.


The Philadelpha Phillies drafted catcher Travis d'Arnaud 37th out of Lakewood High School in California. He was traded to the Blue Jays in 2010. He played 2011 at Double A and hit .311/.371/.542 with 21 home runs, 78 RBI, 72 runs and 4 steals in 114 games.


The Toronto Blue Jays drafted LHP Brett Cecil 38th out of Maryland. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Blue Jays. He was 8-2 with a 5.26 ERA, 63 strikeouts and 1.44 WHIP in 78.2 innings over 12 games at Triple A and was 4-11 with a 4.73 ERA, 87 strikeouts and 1.33 WHIP in 123.2 innings over 20 games with the Blue Jays.


The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted LHP James Adkins 39th out of Tennessee. He was released by the Dodgers in April 2011 and signed with the Reds the next month. He pitched 2011 at Double A and was 0-1 with a 5.74 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 1.75 WHIP in 31.1 innings over 31 games.


The San Diego Padres drafted outfielder Kellen Kulbacki 40th out of James Madison. He was released by the Padres before the 2011 season but played for the Independent team Lake Erie in the Frontier League. He hit .269/.354/.383 with six home runs, 37 RBI, 41 runs and one steal in 89 games.

2009 Baseball America College All Americans in 2011

I'm going to take a look at how the members of the 2009 Baseball America college baseball All American team did in 2011. It will be interesting how well early success translated to their later baseball careers.


RHP Kyle Bellamy of Miami was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the fifth round in 2009. He missed the entire 2011 season due to an arm injury.


RHP Louis Coleman of Louisiana State was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the fifth round in 2009. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Royals. He was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA, 16 strikeouts, 1.14 WHIP and two saves in 7 innings over six games at Triple A and was 1-4 with a 2.87 ERA, 64 strikeouts, 1.17 WHIP and one save in 59.2 innings over 48 games with the Royals.


RHP Mike Leake of Arizona State was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds with the eighth pick of the first round in 2009. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Reds. He was 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA, five strikeouts and 1.64 WHIP in 7.1 innings over two games at Triple A and was 12-9 with a 3.86 ERA, 118 strikeouts and 1.17 WHIP in 167.2 innings over 29 games with the Reds.


RHP A.J. Morris of Kansas State was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the fourth round in 2009. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs in January 2011 but missed the entire season with a shoulder injury.


LHP Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State was drafted by the Washington Nationals with the first over all selection in 2009. He pitched for the Nationals in 2011 and was 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 0.71 WHIP in 24 innings over five games.


Catcher Tony Sanchez was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the fourth pick of the first round in 2009. He played the 2011 season at Double A and hit .241/.340/.318 with five home runs, 44 RBI, 46 runs and 5 steals in 118 games. 


First baseman Dustin Ackley of North Carolina was drafted by the Seattle Mariners with the second pick of the first round in 2009. He split 2011 between Triple A and with the Mariners. He hit .303/.421/.487 with nine home runs, 35 RBI, 57 runs and 7 steals in 66 games at Triple A and hit .273/.348/.417 with six home runs, 36 RBI, 39 runs and 6 steals in 90 games with the Mariners.


Second baseman Derek McCallum of Minnesota was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round in 2009. He split 2011 between Class A and Class A Advanced. He hit .187/.259/.258 with two home runs, 23 RBI, 21 runs and 2 steals in 75 games at Class A and hit .191/.295/.191 with zero home runs, two RBI, four runs and zero steals in 22 games at Class A Advanced.


Third baseman Chris Dominguez of Louisville was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the third round in 2009. He split 2011 between Class A Advanced and Double A. He hit .291/.337/.465 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI, 40 runs and 8 steals in 63 games at Class A Advanced and hit .244/.272/.403 with seven home runs, 45 RBI, 35 runs and one steal in 78 games at Double A.


Shortstop Stephen Cardullo of Florida State went undrafted in 2009 and was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 24th round in 2010. He played 2011 at Rookie ball and hit .288/.372/.525 with 10 home runs, 38 RBI, 38 runs and 3 steals in 61 games.


Outfielder Jason Kipnis of Arizona State was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the second round in 2009. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Indians. Hit hit .280/.362/.484 with 12 home runs, 55 RBI, 65 runs and 12 steals in 92 games at Triple A and hit .272/.333/.507 with seven home runs, 19 RBI, 24 runs and 5 steals in 36 games playing second base with the Indians.


Outfielder Marc Krauss of Ohio was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round in 2009. He played 2011 at Double A and hit .242/.340/.439 with 16 home runs, 65 RBI, 69 runs and 3 steals in 125 games.


Outfielder Kent Matthes of Alabama was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round in 2009. He played 2011 at Class A Advanced and hit .334/.378/.642 with 23 home runs, 95 RBI, 70 runs and 7 steals in 93 games.


DH Rich Poythress was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the second round in 2009. He played 2011 at Double A and hit .267/.347/.461 with 11 home runs, 64 RBI, 50 runs and 2 steals in 122 games.


Utility/RHP Bryce Brentz was a sophomore in 2009. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox with the 36th pick of the first round in 2010. He split 2011 between Class A and Class A Advanced. He hit .359/.414/.647 with 11 home runs, 36 RBI, 43 runs and 2 steals in 40 games at Class A and hit .274/.336/.531 with 19 home runs, 58 RBI, 48 runs and one steal in 75 games at Class A Advanced.

Orlando Cabrera retires

Orlando Cabrera announced his retirement from playing baseball in January 2012. He originally signed with the Montreal Expos as an amateur free agent in 1993 out of Columbia and played shortstop and second base with the Expos from 1997 to 2004. He was traded to the Red Sox during the 2004 season and won a World Series Championship with them. He signed with the Los Angeles Angels in 2005 and played there until 2007 when he was traded to the Chicago White Sox where he played the 2008 season. He signed with the Oakland Athletics at the beginning of 2009 and was traded to the Minnesota Twins during the season. He signed and played with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010. Then he signed with the Cleveland Indians at the start of 2011 and was traded to the San Francisco Giants during the season. For his career he hit .272/.317/.390 with 123 home runs, 854 RBI, 985 runs and 216 steals in 1985 games. 

Craig Counsell retires

Craig Counsell announced his retirement from playing baseball in January 2012. He was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 11th round in 1992 out of Notre Dame. He played briefly with the Rockies in 1995 and 1997. He was traded to the Florida Marlins in 1997 and played second base there 1997 to 1999 and won a World Series Championship in 1997. He was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1999 and released in 2000. He signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2000 and played second, third and shortstop there until 2003 while winning a World Series Championship in 2001. He was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2003 and played with the Brewers in 2004. He signed again withe the Diamondbacks in 2004 and played there in 2005 and 2006. He then signed again with the Brewers and played there 2007 to 2011. For his career he hit .255/.342/.344 with 42 home runs, 390 RBI, 647 runs and 103 steals in 1624 games.

Jorge Posada retires

Jorge Posada announced his retirement from playing baseball in January 2012. He was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the 24th round in 1990 out of Calhoun Community College in Decatur, GA. The Puerto Rico native played catcher and first base for 17 seasons with the Yankees. He played on four World Series Championship teams with the Yankees in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009. He made five All Star teams in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007. For his career he hit .273/.374/.474 with 275 home runs, 1065 RBI, 900 runs and 20 steals in 1829 games.

Pat Burrell retires

Pat Burrell announced his retirement from playing baseball in January 2012. He had been the first overall pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1998 out of the University of Miami. The outfielder and first baseman played for the Phillies from 2000 to 2008 and won a World Series Championship with them in 2008. He played with the Tampa Bay Rays from 2009 to 2010 and then the San Francisco Giants from 2010 to 2011. He won another World Series Championship while with the Giants in 2010. For his career he hit .253/.361/.472 with 292 home runs, 976 RBI, 767 runs and 7 steals in 1640 games.

Russ Canzler traded to Indians

Russ Canzler was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for cash on January 31, 2012. He split 2011 between Triple A where he was the International League MVP and the Rays after a September call up. He plays outfield, third base and first base. In 2011 he hit .314/.401/.530 with 18 home runs, 83 RBI, 78 runs and five steals in 131 games at Triple A and hit .333/.400/.333 with zero home runs, one RBI, zero runs and zero steals in three games with the Rays. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 30th round in 2004.

2008 Baseball America College All Americans in 2011

I'm going to take a look at how the members of the 2008 Baseball America college baseball All American team did in 2011. It will be interesting how well early success translated to their later baseball careers.


RHP Scott Bittle of Ole Miss was drafted by the New York Yankees in the second round in 2008, returned to school and was drafted by the St Louis Cardinals in the fourth round in 2009. He split 2011 between Rookie ball and the Class A short season. He was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA, one strikeout and 1.87 WHIP in 2.2 innings over three games at Rookie ball and was 0-0 with a 10.12 ERA, five strikeouts and 3.00 WHIP in 2.2 innings over three games at Class A short season.


RHP Aaron Crow of Missouri was drafted by the Washington Nationals with the ninth pick of the first round in 2008, opted not to sign and played independent ball and was then drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the 12th pick of the first round in 2009.  He pitched 2011 with the Royals. He was 4-4 with a 2.76 ERA, 65 strikeouts and 1.39 WHIP in 62 innings over 57 games.


LHP Brian Matusz of University of San Diego was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the fourth pick of the first round in 2008. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Orioles. He was 2-3 with a 3.06 ERA, 44 strikeouts and 1.21 WHIP in 64.2 innings over 11 games at Triple A and was 1-9 with a 10.69 ERA, 38 strikeouts and 2.11 WHIP in 49.2 innings over 12 games withe the Orioles.


LHP Rob Musgrave of Wichita State was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 14th round in 2008. He split 2011 between Double A and Triple A. He was 7-2 with a 3.30 ERA, 65 strikeouts and 1.29 WHIP in 79 innings over 23 games at Double A and was 3-2 with a 5.44 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 1.50 WHIP in 44.2 innings over nine games at Triple A.

First Baseman Justin Smoak of South Carolina was drafted by the Texas Rangers with the 11th pick of the first round in 2008. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2010. He played 2011 with the Mariners and hit .234/.323/.396 with 15 home runs, 55 RBI, 38 runs and zero steals in 123 games.


Second baseman Josh Satin of Cal was drafted by the New York Mets in the sixth round in 2008. He split 2011 between Double A, Triple A and the Mets. He was .325/.423/.538 with 11 home runs, 60 RBI, 60 runs and 2 steals in 94 games at Double A, hit .317/.381/.393 with one home run, 16 RBI, 17 runs and one steal in 38 games at Triple A and hit .200/.259/.240 with zero home runs, two RBI, three runs and zero steals in 15 games with the Mets.


Third baseman Brett Wallace of Arizona State was drafted by the St Louis Cardinals with the 13th pick of the first round in 2009. He was traded to the Athletics and later to the Blue Jays in 2009. He was traded to the Astros in 2010. He split the 2011 season between Triple A and the Astros. He hit .356/.437/.481 with one home run, 24 RBI, 16 runs and one steal in 28 games at Triple A and hit .259/.334/.369 with five home runs, 29 RBI, 37 runs and one steal in 115 games with the Astros.


Shortstop Gordon Beckham of Georgia was drafted by the Chicago White Sox with the eighth pick of the first round in 2008. He played 2011 with the White Sox and hit .230/.296/.337 with 10 home runs, 44 RBI, 60 runs and 5 steals in 150 games.


Outfielder Sawyer Carroll of Kentucky was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the third round in 2008. He played 2011 at Double A and hit .267/.352/.463 with 18 home runs, 71 RBI, 68 runs and 11 steals in 129 games.


Outfielder Blake Dean of Louisiana State was a sophomore in 2008. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 10th round in 2009, returned to school and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the eighth round in 2010. He played 2011 at Class A and hit .237/.309/.349 with seven home runs, 44 RBI, 32 runs and one steal in 96 games.


Outfielder Chris Shehan was Georgia Southern was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 30th round in 2008. He was released by the Braves in 2010 and did not play in 2011.


DH Yonder Alonso of Miami was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds with the seventh pick of the first round in 2008. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Reds. He hit .296/.374/.486 with 12 home runs, 56 RBI, 46 runs and 6 steals in 91 games at Triple A and hit .330/.398/.545 with five home runs, 15 RBI, nine runs and zero steals in 47 games with the Reds. After the season he was traded to the Padres.


Utility/LHP Ike Davis of Arizona State was drafted by the New York Mets with the 18th pick of the first round in 2008.  He played the 2011 season with the Mets before it ended with an ankle injury. He hit .302/.383/.543 with seven home runs, 25 RBI, 20 runs and zero steals in 36 games.

RHP Preston Guilmet of Arizona was a sophomore in 2007. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 22nd round in 2008, returned to Arizona and was then drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the ninth round in 2009. He pitched 2011 at Class A Advanced and was 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA, 60 strikeouts, 0.93 WHIP and 35 saves in 58.1 innings over 52 games.


RHP Adam Mills of North Carolina-Charlotte was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round in 2007. He was released by the the Red Sox before the 2011 season and did not play.


LHP David Price of Vanderbilt was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays first overall in 2007. He pitched the 2011 season with the Rays. He was 12-13 with a 3.49 ERA, 218 strikeouts and 1.14 WHIP in 224.1 innings over 34 games.


RHP Jacob Thompson was a sophomore in 2007. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fifth round in 2008. He pitched 2011 at Triple A and was 1-4 with a 8.78 ERA, 25 strikeouts and 2.25 WHIP in 26.2 innings over seven games.


RHP Casey Weathers of Vanderbilt was drafted by the Colorado Rockies with the eighth pick of the first round in 2007. He pitched 2011 at Double A and was 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA, 48 strikeouts and 1.75 WHIP in 45.2 innings over 44 games.


Catcher Matt Wieters of Georgia Tech was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the fifth pick of the first round in 2007. He played the 2011 season with the Orioles. He hit .262/.328/.450 with 22 home runs, 68 RBI, 72 runs and one steal in 139 games.

He hit .187/.381/.375 with one home run, two RBI, two runs and zero steals in six games at Class A Advanced, hit .256/.365/.432 with five home runs, 19 RBI, 16 runs and zero steals in 35 games at Triple A and hit .191/.272/.289 with four home runs, 19 RBI, 18 runs and one steal in 74 games with the Pirates.
