Protective Head Gear for Pitchers in 2014

They announced that pitchers in the MLB will have the option to wear protective head gear in 2014. I think it is a great idea. I spent very little time on the mound playing baseball but did quite a bit playing softball. I endured more than a handful of missiles off the bat hitting my body and was fortunate never to have taken one to the head. The pitcher is the most vulnerable player on the field being the shortest distance from home plate than all the others. That shorter distance means less time to react and lessening the ability of the pitcher to protect himself. There will likely only be a few to wear it at first. At least they now have the option.
