5 cycles in 8 days

There were five cycles in minor league baseball over the span of March 22, 2012 to March 29, 2012. I'm going to take a moment to put those five players in the spotlight.

Tony Plagman of the Erie SeaWolves had his cycle on March 22 in a 4 for 5 game with the Tigers Double A team. He hit a grand slam in the first inning, a double in the fifth, a triple in the seventh and a single in the ninth. For the season the outfielder is hitting .204/.276/.408 with 7 HR, 28 RBI, 15 R and 4 SB in 42 games. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the ninth round in 2010.

Stefen Romero of the High Desert Mavericks also had his cycle on March 22 in a 4 for 5 game with the Seattle Mariners Class A Advanced team. He hit a double in the third, a two-run home run in the fourth, a triple in the seventh and a single in the eighth. For the season the third baseman in hitting .355/.385/.570 with 8 HR, 40 RBI, 35 R and 4 SB in 46 games. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the 12th round in 2010.

Travis Witherspoon of Inland Empire 66ers hit for his cycle on May 24 in a 4 for 5 game with the Los Angeles Angels Class A Advanced team. He hit a double in the first inning, a solo home run in the second, a single in the sixth and a triple in the eighth. For the season the outfielder is hitting .304/.371/.458 with 5 HR, 22 RBI, 40 R and 19 SB in 52 games.

Kyle Skipworth of the Jacksonville Suns had his cycle on May 26 in a 4 for 4 game with the Miami Marlins Double A team. He hit a double in the first inning, added a sac fly in the second, hit a single in the fourth, hit a  grand slam in the fifth and got his triple in the seventh. For the season the catcher is hitting .221/.290/.409 with 6 HR, 26 RBI, 18 R and 1 SB in 43 games. He was originally drafted by the Marlins with the sixth pick of the first round in 2008.

Chad Oberacker of the Stockton Ports hit for his cycle on May 29 in a 4 for 6 game with the Oakland Athletics Class A Advanced team. He hit a single in the third, a three run home run in the fourth, a triple in the sixth and a double in the eighth. For the season the outfielder is hitting .280/.352/.445 with 5 HR, 21 R, 24 R and 11 SB in 40 games combined between Class A and Class A Advanced. He was originally drafted by the Athletics in the 25th round in 2011.

Paul Goldschmidt Uber Freak?

If Tim Lincecum is the Freak does that make Paul Goldschmidt the Uber Freak? In his budding career Goldschmidt is now 7 for 13 with 4 home runs against Lincecum. If one player ever owned a superstar it is certainly Goldschmidt. He carries a kryptonite bat to the plate to face the two time Cy Young Award winner. If the .538 average doesn't catch your eye the 1.538 slugging percentage certainly will. Being in the same division should ensure several more head to head match ups for years to come.

Brent Morel Rehab Game 053012

Brent Morel played his first rehab game with the White Sox Triple A team Charlotte Knights on May 30. He was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs while playing third base. Charlotte lost to the Rochester Red Wings 11-10.

Yoenis Cespedes Rehab Game 053012

Yoenis Cespedes played his third rehab game with the Athletics Triple A team Sacramento River Cats on May 30. He was 0 for 2 with a walk while playing left field. Sacramento defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 3-1.

Pendulum Swinging Against Umps

Tigers Skipper Jim Leyland spoke his mind after the umps blew a call in a 7-4 Memorial Day loss to the Red Sox. Later the same day James Loney was calling for changes to umpiring after his Dodgers fell to the Brewers 3-2 after a controversial call. I think the pendulum is slowing starting to swing in the other direction toward my views on umpiring. Arguments can be made that these mistakes are just part of the game. But as these mistakes add up the calls for change will grow louder.

Derrick Salberg Catch

Derrick Salberg of of Lower Columbia College in Washington made one of the greatest catches ever at any level. The Freshman outfielder when all out to rob a home run away from Keone Kela of Everett. The catch was the last play of the game and helped preserve a 4-2 victory.

Jonathan Lucroy breaks hand

Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy will miss four to six weeks with a broken hand. Injuries are part of the game but this was an off field accident. Lucroy broke his right hand when a suitcase fell on it in his hotel room. This goes right along with the dislocated ankle suffered by Joba Chamberlain on a trampoline and shoulder injured by Jeremy Guthrie falling off his bicycle. His bat will be greatly missed in the Brewers' line up as he has hit .345/.387/.583 with 5 HR, 30 RBI, 17 R and 2 SB in 43 games. He was really heating the last seven games hitting .417 (10 for 24) with 3 HR, 10 RBI, 7 R and 0 SB. Hopefully it is a speedy recovering for Lucroy who is developing into one of the game's better offensive catchers.

Brandon Inge Rehab game 052612

Brandon Inge played his second rehab game with the Athletics Triple A team Sacramento River Cats on May 26. He was 5 for 5 with 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 7 RBI and 3 runs while playing third base. Sacramento defeated the Reno Aces 10-0.

Yoenis Cespedes Rehab Game 052812

Yoesnis Cespedes played in his first rehab game with the Athletics Triple A team Sacramento River Cats on May 28. He was 1 for 3 with a strikeout while playing left field. Sacramento lost 10-2 to the Reno Aces.
