Regular season starts or did it?

The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners flew to Japan for a series of exhibition games with two Nippon League teams. Then the Athletics and the Mariners played two games that were reported to be the start of the MLB regular season. Yet after they come back the Athletics and Mariners both have additional games scheduled to be played in the Cactus League. How can this be? What sport has ever started regular season play and then returned to play more pre-season games? From their performances against the Yomiuri Giants and the Hanshin Tigers the MLB was not represented well. I'm inclined to think that the two games between the Athletics and Mariners were nothing more than Cactus League games played on the road in Tokyo.

Ryota Igarashi traded to Blue Jays

Ryota Igarashi was traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Toronto Blue Jays on March 30, 2012. In exchange the Pirates will receive a player to be named later and cash. Igarashi signed with the Pirates in December after being released by the Mets. In 2011 he was 4-1 with a 4.66 ERA, 42 strikeouts and 1.84 WHIP in 38.2 innings over 45 games with the Mets. In his two year career with the Mets the RHP was 5-2 with a 5.74 ERA, 67 strikeouts and 1.71 WHIP in 69.0 innings over 79 games. He originally signed with the Mets as a free agent in 2009 out of Japan.

Matt Rizzotti traded to Twins

Matt Rizzotti was traded by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Minnesota Twins on March 30, 2012 in exchange for cash. Rizzotti should provide depth at first base. He played at Double A in 2011 and hit .295/.392/.511 with 24 home runs, 84 RBI, 73 runs and 4 steals in 139 games. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the sixth round in 2007.

Jairo Asencio traded to Indians

Jairo Asencio was traded by the Atlanta Braves to the Cleveland Indians on March 29, 2012 in exchange for cash. The RHP split 2011 between Triple A and the Braves and was 3-2 with a 1.81 ERA, 70 strikeouts, 1.19 WHIP and 26 saves in 71.1 innings over 58 games at Triple A and was 0-0 with a 6.97 ERA, eight strikeouts and 2.03 WHIP in 10.1 innings over six games with the Braves. College Spotlight 032612

Here is my week six installment of College Spotlight for 2012. This week I am looking at  Chad Christensen of Nebraska and Zach Godley of Tennessee.

Junior Shortstop Chad Christensen of Nebraska is one of the leading hitters on a team that is among the national leaders in team batting average, home runs and runs. Christensen is coming off a strong performance on Sunday against Illinois when he was three for five with four RBI, three runs and one steal. For the season he is hitting .389/.459/.657 with six home runs, 33 RBI, 28 runs and four steals in 26 games. Most of those totals already surpassed his sophomore season when he hit .292/.335/.344 with one home run, 16 RBI, 24 runs and five steals in 55 games.

Junior RHP Zach Godley of Tennessee is the big giant killer of the week as he helped hand Kentucky their first loss of the season. On Friday he went eight innings and only allowed three hits, two walks and one earned run while having four strikeouts. For the season he is 4-1 with a 2.92 ERA, 30 strikeouts and 0.97 WHIP in 37.0 innings over six games, He gained experience in the bullpen his sophomore season as he was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA, 34 strikeouts, 1.69 WHIP and two saves over 32.0 innings over 28 games.

Tommy John claims Soria and Madson

Royals closer Joakim Soria and Reds closer Ryan Madson will both miss the 2012 season after elbow injuries require Tommy John surgery. Both should require 12 to 18 months to recover. Soria has expressed a desire to return to Kansas City after his rehab period but his contract may be too costly for the organization. Madson was signed by the Reds in the off season to a one year deal.

In other injury news this week Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain dislocated his ankle in a gruesome accident while on a trampoline with his son. He was still recovering from Tommy John surgery and was expected to return in June. Now he will also miss the entire 2012 season.

Greg Golson traded to White Sox

Darkside Draft 2012

Earlier I wrote about my experience at this year's fantasy baseball draft. My draft was from the vantage point of a team that finished second the previous year and the bulk of my team remained the same in a 5x5 keeper league. During the draft I made it a point to follow the draft of the team with the deepest pockets since he basically dismantled his team and was in major rebuild mode. That team I have referred to previously as the Darkside. The Darkside entered the draft with $227 of a possible $300 available and a total of 37 roster spots available.

As I mentioned in my draft post the Darkside threw a curve out the gates by throwing out Cardinals first base prospect Matt Adams. I did make a bid to see how serious he was but the Darkside landed Adams at $4. Adams is viewed as the Cardinals first baseman of the future and has shown the ability to hit for average and power. In 2011 at Double A he hit .300/.357/.566 with 32 home runs in 115 games.

Also in the first round the Darkside went after and landed Angels shortstop Erick Aybar for $21. In 2011 Aybar hit .279/.322/.421 with 10 home runs and 30 steals in 143 games. The Darkside had their shortstop who was ranked ninth by MLB.

The Darkside made an attempt at Ian Kinsler at the end of the first round but he went elsewhere at $34. Instead he landed Brandon Phillips with the next pick for $23. MLB ranked Kinsler the number two second baseman while Phillips is fifth. In 2011 Phillips hit a career best .300/.353/.457 with 18 home runs and 14 steals. We'll have to see if Phillips can maintain that or return to levels closer to his career numbers .272/.322/.434.

In the second round the Darkside fired another curve by throwing out Reds third base prospect James Darnell and he was bidded up to $6 before he could claim him. I had written about him as part of the Mat Latos trade but he really wasn't on my radar. In 2011 he split time between Double A and Triple A hitting a combined .310/.406/.547 with 23 home runs and 2 steals in 111 games before getting an 18 game call up with the Padres.

The second round also included an attempt for Carl Crawford but he landed out of reach at $26. Yet for the same price the Darkside did land John Hamilton at end of the round. The MLB ranks Crawford as the 15th outfielder while Hamilton is 11th. In 2011 Hamilton hit .298/.346/.536 with 25 home runs and 8 steals a year after winning the MVP. I've always liked Hamilton and he was on my roster for years but as I've said its nice to see them leave the nest at high prices.

In the third round the Darkside made a run at 17th ranked outfielder Matt Holliday but he landed elsewhere for $28. With the very next picked he snagged Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester for $23. The MLB has Lester as the number 16 starting pitcher. In 2011 Lester was 15-9 with a 3.47 ERA, 182 strikeouts and 1.26 WHIP in 191.2 innings over 31 games.

In the same round they landed another pitcher with the Indians Ubaldo Jimenez at $13. The MLB has Jimenez at number 40. In 2011 split the season between the Rockies and Indians and was 10-13 with a 4.68 ERA, 180 strikeouts and 1.40 WHIP in 188.1 innings over 32 games. That is only one season removed from a career best year.

At the top of the fourth round the Darkside grabbed Angels first baseman Kendrys Morales for $11. The MLB has him as the 15th ranked first baseman although he'll now be behind Albert Pujols and will DH. Yet they are making that ranking based on him being first base eligible although he hasn't played since he was injured in 2010. In his last full season in 2009 he hit .306/.355/.569 with 34 home runs and 3 steals in 152 games. He's still not 100% but the Angels and the Darkside hope he can approach those numbers again as a DH.

Then from his spot he threw out Mets second base prospect Reese Havens and got him for $1. In 2011 Havens played 58 games at Double A and hit .289/.372/.455 with six home runs and 2 steals but missed most of the season with injuries.

Later that same round the Darkside made the move that had many really scratching their heads because of the price as he landed Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval at $30. Sandoval is the tenth ranked third baseman by MLB and can hit for average and power. In 2011 he hit .315/.357/.552 with 23 home runs and 2 steals in 117 games.

At the end of the same round he also took Arizona shortstop Stephen Drew for $10. Drew is trying to return from an ankle injury and that may contribute to why the MLB has him as the number 16 shortstop. In his last full season in 2010 Drew hit .278/.352/.458 with 15 home runs and 10 steals in 151 games. But again staying healthy always seems to be a Drew family issue.

Near the front of the fifth round Pirates outfield prospect Starling Marte was thrown out and the Darkside got him for only $2. In 2011 at Double A Marte hit .332/.370/.500 with 12 home runs and 24 steals in 129 games. He had been on the list of position players I was interested in but I didn't make an attempt.

Later in the fifth he landed Corey Hart for $17. MLB has him as the 28th ranked outfielder. In 2011 Hart hit .285/.356/.510 with 26 home runs and 7 steals in 130 games.

I battled the Darkside and the end of the fifth when I got Mike Moustakas for $12. He then countered by throwing out the top third base prospect in the minors by throwing out Nolan Arenado of the Rockies organization. I made a couple counters but he got him for $7. In 2011 at Class A Advanced Arenado hit .298/.34/.487 with 20 home runs, a minors best 122 RBI and 2 steals in 134 games.

At the end of the fifth I battled the Darkside again and lost out on the Yankees Eduardo Nunez for $6. As I mentioned Nunez should getting plenty of time backing up old men Jeter at short and Rodriguez at third. In 2011 he hit .265/.313/.385 with five home runs and 22 steals in 112 games.

I threw out Nyjer Morgan in the sixth and he made a bid but landed elsewhere at $6. In the seventh he threw out shortstop prospect Jurickson Profar and we both made some counters before he landed elsewhere at $8. He was in bargain roster fill mode the next couple rounds as he got Alexi Casilla $4, Carlos Pena $5, Lorenzo Cain $4 and Pedro Alvarez $3. In 2011 with the Twins Casilla hit .260/.322/.368 with two home runs and 15 steals in 97 games. In 2011 with the Cubs Pena hit .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs and 2 steals in 153 games. Cain cut his teeth at the Royals Triple A in 2011 and hit .312/.380/.497 with 16 home runs and 16 steals in 128 games. Alvarez split time between the minors and Pirates in 2011 and hit .191/.272/.289 with four home runs and one steal in 74 games with the Pirates.

The ninth round was the last time my path crossed with the Darkside in the draft. He threw out Bud Norris and we countered a few times before I landed him at $9. He threw out Josh Collmenter in the 10th and he went elsewhere for $4. He threw out Phil Hughes in the 11th and he went elsewhere for $5. Then he threw out and got Joe Blanton for $1. In 2011 with the Phillies Blanton was 1-2 with a 5.10 ERA, 35 strikeouts and 1.48 WHIP in 41.1 innings over 11 games.

In the 13th round he threw out and got Dodgers outfield prospect Scott Van Slyke for $1. In 2011 at Double A Van Slyke hit .348/.427/.595 with 20 home runs and 6 steals in 130 games.

In the 14th round he threw out Athletics catching prospect Derek Norris. In 2011 at Double A he hit .210/.367/.446 with 20 home runs and 13 steals in 104 games.

In the 15th he threw out White Sox outfielder Alejandro De Aza who he got for $4. De Aza split 2011 between Triple A where he hit .322/.378/.494 with nine home runs and 22 steals in 99 games and the White Sox where he hit .329/.400/.520 with four home runs and 12 steals in 54 games.

He took a few rounds off and came back in the 18th round to throw out and land his last player Royals pitcher Greg Holland. In 2011 Holland was 5-1 with a 1.80 ERA, 74 strikeouts, 0.93 WHIP and 4 saves in 60.0 innings over 46 games. Holland will now be in the mix to be the Royals closer with the recent injury to Jochim Soria.

He left the draft with no money left on the table and 10 roster spots plus three farm spots still open. After he moves his prospects to the farm he will have enough funds to pick up seven free agents off the waiver wire at $5 each. Those pick ups should help address depth concerns. Otherwise it was a fairly good draft for making his core team.

Humberto Quintero traded to Royals

Humberto Quintero was traded by the Houston Astros to the Kansas City Royals on March 20, 2012 along with Jason Bourgeois. In exchange the Astros receive minor league player Kevin Chapman and a player to be named later.

The trade was deemed necessary by the Royals due to the injury to catcher Savador Perez. Quintero will share time at catcher with Brayan Pena while Perez is out. He played the last seven seasons with the Astros and the two prior with the Padres. In 2011 he hit .240/.258/.317 with two home runs, 25 RBI, 22 runs and one steal in 79 games. For his career he has hit .234/.268/.321 with 15 home runs, 94 RBI, 80 runs and one steal in 379 games. On defense his career fielding percentage is .992 and he has thrown out 32% of attempted steals. He was originally signed by the Chicago White Sox as an amateur free agent in1997 out of Venezuela.

Bourgeois is an outfielder who played two seasons with the Astros after one with the Brewers and one with the White Sox. In 2011 he hit .294/.323/.357 with one home run, 16 RBI, 30 runs and 31 steals in 93 games. For his career he has hit .262/.307/.324 with two home runs, 22 RBI, 52 runs and 46 steals in 192 games. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the second round in 2000.

Chapman is a LHP who split 2011 between Class A Advanced and Double A. He was 0-2 with a 4.84 ERA, 40 strikeouts, 1.39 ERA and 7 saves in 22.1 innings over 15 games at Class A Advanced and was 1-2 with a 4.99 ERA, 50 strikeouts, 1.46 WHIP and 3 saves in 39.2 innings over 25 games at Double A. He was originally drafted by the Royals in the fourth round in 2010.

Davis Stoneburner traded to Indians

Davis Stoneburner was traded by the Texas Rangers to the Cleveland Indians on March 19, 2012 as he was deemed the player named later from the February 21 trade that sent Kelvin De La Cruz to the Rangers. It is an odd twist since De La Cruz was later traded back to the Indians on March 15.

Stoneburner primarily played second at Double A in 2011 plus three games in the outfield and one at shortstop. He hit .269/.341/.413 with nine home runs, 47 RBI, 64 runs and 18 steals in 116 games. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the ninth round in 2007.

My Draft 2012

Yesterday was the fantasy baseball draft in our 5x5 keeper league. It was over six hours of fun that included  plenty of jokes, adult beverages and baseball strategy. After finishing second last year the bulk of my team remained intact and I went in with a little more available funds but also had a few more spots to replace. Last year I went in with $41 and eight roster spots to fill out of a possible 50 including 10 for farm eligible. This year I went in with $53 to spend but ideally had to spread that over 12 new players. Also similar to last year there were a few teams that scrapped their teams and nearly started from scratch with the majority of the possible $300 available to them.

One decision that I changed a few times before the draft was how I planned to allocate the 12 available spots. Initially I planned on splitting it evenly between pitchers and position players. Then I pushed the edge to seven position players and five pitchers. Finally I decided to stick to the traditional view that position players are more valuable than pitchers so I planned on nine position players and three pitchers. Of course that was subject to change depending on how things went draft day.

I knew that I wasn't going to be able to get top dollar talent so I gathered the names of players I thought I had a chance at. On draft day I went into the draft with three columns on a piece of paper: pitchers, position players and bait. The bait players were either players I knew I had no chance at or players I didn't want but were on team rosters the previous year at prices I knew the others would be willing to bid for.

The first round went as expected and the bidding wars ensued for the big names like Albert Pujols $38, Adrian Gonzalez $34, Justin Verland $35, Robinson Cano $33, Joey Votto $35, Ryan Zimmerman $27 and Ian Kinsler $34. A few odd first round offerings were Mariano Rivera $15, Alex Gordon $21, Erick Aybar $21 and Alex Rios $14. The big curve ball of the round was prospect Matt Adams being thrown out at the third position. Adams was a player I had on my list so I put a cursory counter bid at $2 but quickly called off the chase and he went for $4. Votto was the player I threw out after having him on my roster the past few seasons but he was a bait player because I knew I had no realistic chance at him. It is always nice to see the players that initially cut their teeth on my roster leave the nest for high prices.

In the second round Dan Haren was thrown out and he happened to be at the top of my pitcher list. Yet I hoped his name wouldn't be thrown out until the later rounds because I knew the price would be too much this soon. My cap was $15 for Haren and it quickly went past that before stopping at $25. I had the same cap set for Ricky Romero who was thrown out in the fourth round and he fell out of my reach at $18. The players I threw out in the second, third, fourth and fifth rounds were Carl Crawford $26, Alex Rodriguez $21, Yoenis Cespedes $14 and Yadier Molina $9.

Then at the end of the fifth round I was surprised to hear the name Mike Moustakas thrown out because I thought he had been kept on another roster. I happily jumped at the chance and figured If I had been willing to go to $15 for Haren and Romero I would do the same for Moustakas. I needed a third baseman and was happy to land him at $12. One thing I like about Moustakas is that he has shown the ability to hit home runs by the 36 he hit in 2010 in the minors. He also showed promise in his post All Star game split after being called up by hitting .276/.314/.398 with four home runs and 26 RBI in 64 games. He has shown that it takes him some time to adjust to a new level but once he does he hits well.

In the sixth round I threw out Nyjer Morgan $6 and then heard the name of the player at the top of my position list. Eduardo Nunez is a back up at third and shortstop with the Yankees but should see plenty of time doing both. I placed my last bid at $5 and didn't want to go any higher because of the other players I wanted. I lost him at $6.

In the seventh round I threw out Ryan Raburn $6 and bid on Francisco Liriano but called off that chase and he went for $8. In the eighth round I threw out Mitch Moreland $5 and bid on Anthony Rizzo and bit my tongue as he went for $4. In the ninth round I threw out Rajai Davis $3.

In the ninth round I also picked up my first two pitchers. Joe Wieland of the Padres organization was thrown out and although he was further down on the list of pitchers I wanted I threw out a bid of $2 and got him for that. This was almost an example of putting your money where your mouth is because I had written about Wieland last year and might as well pick up a player I believed in. In 2011 between the Rangers and Padres minor league teams he was 13-4 while always maintaining a sub 3.00 ERA. He should be helped going to the Padre's pitchers park.

The other ninth round pitcher I got was Bud Norris for $9. Although he plays on a weak Houston team Norris brings the ability to strike people out as his big asset. His first half in 2011 was much better than his post All Star break performance but he continues to show improvement each year. He is entering his prime at 27 and could be ready for a break out year.

Then in the tenth round I found myself in a quandary. I threw out Chris Davis from my bait list and as "$2 going once" was called out I found myself countering with $3 because I couldn't see him going that low. I picked him up at $3 and might have backed into a steal. Davis showed promise in 2009 hitting 21 home runs in 113 games with the Rangers. Last season he hit .372 with 24 home runs in the minors for both the Rangers and Orioles organizations. Right now Davis is tabbed as the Orioles starting first baseman. While not the hitters ball park that Arlington is the stadium in Baltimore is still in the top 12 in allowing both runs and home runs.

In the 11th round I threw out Marlon Byrd $5 and in the 12th round I was down to the last player on my bait list. I threw out Victor Martinez and there were some rumblings from those that didn't realize he was available and others who didn't want to waste a pick on an injured player who wouldn't play this year. He went for $6.

The 13th round came and it was time to start filling out my roster. Early in the round pitcher Trevor Bauer was thrown out and I quickly countered and countered again. Some one said it was apparent who I had been waiting for. He was the highest pitcher I had remaining on my list because he had been third behind Haren and Romero. I don't follow the prices the books try to set and decided that $10 was my limit for Bauer. He was mine at $7. Three things I like about Bauer are his work ethic, strikeout ability and control.   While at UCLA last year he had 203 strikeouts against only 36 walks in 136.2 innings. He will start the season on my farm team until he shows he can compete in the big leagues.

The 13th round also marked the point where I started throwing out players from my real draft list. I would throw out position players first and if that happened to be become exhausted then I would head into the pitchers list although I already hit the three pitcher mark. First I threw out Eric Sogard and got him for $1.  Sogard is a utility player with the Athletics whose default position is short stop and he also plays second and third. Besides offering position depth Sogard showed the ability in the minors to hit around .300 and reach double digits in home runs and steals. The Athletics saw he could hit when they drafted him in the second round in 2007 after he hit .400 and helped Arizona State get to the College World Series.

In the 14th round I drafted Kyle Seagar for $1. He is currently a back up at second and third but is challenging for the starting spot at third.  Seagar showed his promise in 2010 hitting .345/.419/.503 with 14 home runs and 13 steals in 135 games at Class A Advanced. He followed that up in 2011 by hitting .333/.399/.495 with seven home runs and 11 steals in 90 games across Double A and Triple A before being promoted to the Mariners for 53 games and hit .253/.312/.379 with three home runs and three steals. The Mariners drafted him in the third round in 2009 after he hit .393/.487/.592 with six home runs and 13 steals to help North Carolina to the College World Series.

The 15th round met my first challenge from others in these later rounds as I threw out Eric Young Jr. I've held him at various times the last couple seasons but didn't keep him on the roster in hopes I could pick him up cheaper. Yet he is known as a source for stolen bases. I set my cap on him at $5 and was able to get him back at that. At least that guarantees I have him this season and next while I hope he develops into the player I know he can be. As a back up in the outfield and at second he managed 27 steals in only 229 plate appearances over 77 games in 2011. He started to show the ability to hit at Triple A last year with .363/.454/.552 but he needs the chance prove he can do that in the Majors. Hopefully he can be traded else where and be given that opportunity.

Near top of the 16th round Gary Brown was thrown out and I had high hopes for him but called off the chase at $6 and he went for $7. The Giants outfield prospect did put up some crazy numbers in 2011 hitting .336/.407/.519 with 14 home runs and 53 steals in 131 games at Class A Advanced. Yet he wasn't one of those players I felt I had to have at any cost so I threw out Padres outfield prospect Rymer Liriano and got him at $1 instead. In 2011 at Class A Liriano hit .319/.383/.499 with 12 home runs and 65 steals 116 games.

The 17th round was when I picked up the first of three players I felt I just had to have. I threw out Angels first base prospect C. J Cron for $1 and got him for that. One thing that I've always liked about Cron is that he is the only player to have gotten three hits off Stephen Strasburg in a college game.
The Angels drafted him in the first round in 2011 after he hit .434/.517/.803 with 15 home runs in 49 games and he tore through Rookie ball hitting .308/.371/.629 with 13 home runs in 34 games before a dislocated knee cap ended his season.

In the 18th round I picked up Red Sox outfield prospect Bryce Brentz for $1. In 2011 he hit .359/.414/.647 with 11 home runs in 40 games at Class A and hit .274/.336/.531 with 19 home runs in 75 gamess at Class A Advanced. The ability to hit 30 home runs in a season no matter the level is a big positive for me. The Red Sox drafted Brentz late in the first round in 2010 after hitting .348/.440/.636 with 15 home runs in 46 games. In 2009 he led the nation as a sophomore hitting .465/.535/.930 with 28 home runs in 60 games.

My final player selected was Carlos Correa for $1. He keeps in line with my tradition of drafting a player that will likely be drafted in the next MLB draft. The last two I took were Bryce Harper and Bubba Starling. A couple other teams have followed my lead on this but they have stayed with college players. As with Starling last year Correa is a high school player. He plays shortstop at the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and is reported to be a five tool player. While currently committed to play for the University of Miami a top 10 draft position at the MLB draft should change that. I'll have to wait until next June to see where he is drafted and next July what his final decision is.

That concludes by 2012 draft report and I can't wait for the season to start.

College Spotlight 031912

Here is my week five installment of College Spotlight for 2012. This week I am looking at Sean Bignall of University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Corey Littrell of Kentucky.

Senior outfielder Sean Bignall of UALR entered last week among the national leaders in home runs, RBI, doubles, runs, hits, total bases, slugging percentage and on base percentage. Then he endured a one for 19 slump over a five game stretch over the week. Even after that hit to his stats he is still hitting an impressive .375/.469/.850 with nine home runs, 35 RBI, 24 runs and four steals in 21 games. That is a great improvement over his junior season when he hit .244/.372/.346 with two home runs, 15 RBI, 32 runs and 11 steals in 58 games. I hope he can halt his current slide and return to early season form rather than fall to numbers that resemble his previous year.

Sophomore LHP Corey Litrell of Kentucky is positioned as the third starter on the staff bu he is currently putting up the best numbers. This season he is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 1.17 WHIP in 29.1 innings over five games. That builds on his Freshman season when he was 6-6 with a 6.95 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 1.74 WHIP in 68.2 innings over 16 games. The rest of the Kentucky starters Jerad Grundy, Taylor Rogers, A.J. Reed and Chandler Shepherd also deserve kudos for helping Kentucky to a 21-0 start and their sweep of second ranked and defending national champion South Carolina over the weekend.
