Jeff Larish bid to play all 9

Jeff Larish of the Indianapolis Indians made an attempt to add his name to baseball lore by playing all nine positions in a game. Yet the game was called due to rain early before he could set up behind home plate in catchers gear. Two innings and one position short of being part of history. Yet looking at the box score it is interesting to see the progression of Larish getting credit for each position he played. He started in the outfield playing left field, center field and right field through the first three innings. Then he made his way around the infield playing third, shortstop, second and first. He actually played first for the first two outs of the seventh and took the mound facing two batters and walked one before getting a pop up to short to end the inning. Heavy rain forced the game to end early with Indianapolis winning 2-0 over the Louisville Bats.

Besides Larish playing the eight positions it is interesting to look at the box score and see the other players that shifted around the field also. Brandon Boggs played all three outfield positions and Hector Luna kept changing between third, second and first. That versatility could serve them in the future.

Although this effort showed his fielding prowess Larish did struggle at the plate all season. In 2012 he hit .182/.308/.298 with 2 HR, 24 RBI, 22 R, 0 SB in 61 games. This season was a bounce back after breaking his leg in July 2011 while sliding into home as he played for the Phillies Triple A team Lehigh Valley. He had signed with the Orioles in January 2012 only to be released in March. He signed with the Red Sox at the end of April only to be traded to the Pirates about two weeks later. He was certainly living up to the term journeyman.

He was originally drafted by the Tigers in fifth round in 2005. In three seasons of MLB experience with the Tigers and Athletics he had hit .224/.308/.380 with 8 HR, 32 RBI, 30 R, 3 SB in 101 games. Larish will be 30 on October 11.
